A STORY A DAY : SEVEN RAVENS

SEVEN RAVENS

Once there lived a man and woman who had seven sons, but longed for a daughter.
When their eighth child was a girl, they were very happy.
At last their wish had come true.

The beautiful baby girl was a thirstylittle thing, so the seven sons were sent out to the well to fetch water.

"TAKE THIS SILVER CUP AND FILL IT FOR THE BABY," said their mother.
But the silver cup was felt into the well with a SPLASH!
The boys were too frightened to go home.

When they didn't return, their father had cursed them, "MAY THOSE LAZY GOOD-FOR-NOTHING BOYS BECOME RAVENS! " he shouted.
As soon the words left his mouth, he saw seven ravens flying off into the distance.
Although he regretted his words, it was too late to undo his curse.

When the girl grew older, her sad mother told her all about her seven ravens brother.
The brave girl vowed to find them home.

She set off, taking her mother's ring as a keepsake, and searched the world over.
"WHERE ARE MY SEVEN RAVENS BROTHERS?" she called up to the heavens.
The stars could see that the poor girl was in despair and took pity on her.
They sent down a magical key and, as the girl picked it up, she heard these words :

"Follow our light to a mountain of a glass.
You'll find your ravens brothers at last."

After walking for many days, the young girl finally reached the glass mountain.
Using the key she entered a crystal cave and, although nobody was there, she noticed seven little plated and cups lain out with food and drink ready for their return.

Being very hungry, she took a bite from each plate and a sip from each cup.
Her ring fell into the last cup but, before she could pick it up again, she heard the SWISH! of wings.
She hid behind a door and watched seven ravens swoop down.

Each ravens noticed that some of their food and drink was missing.
Then the last raven found a ring in his cup and recognised it as his mother's.

"If only our little sister has come to find us," he exclaimed, "for when we could return home with her."
On hearing this, their brave little sister jumped out from behind the door.
As soon as they saw her, the ravens turned back into their human form.

THEY RETURN HOME WITH A HUGE CELEBRATION AND LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER!
